Meet BRI’s Summer Interns 2026

Each summer, BRI welcomes undergraduate interns across our labs. Interns come from universities across the country to get hands-on research experience, learn new tools and techniques and explore careers in biomedical research.

Investigating immune cells from people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) to better understand how T cells target the pancreas.

Investigating how the immune system responds to DNA in people with lupus to better understand the mechanisms that drive the disease.

Johnathan Quiroz-Parks (Buckner Lab)

Johnathan’s project

Introducing a new research technique called PRECISE-seq to the Buckner Lab. This technology helps scientists identify which immune cells respond to specific threats, how strongly they respond and what state they're in, providing a more detailed picture of how the immune system works.

Rittika’s project

Comparing the immune systems of people with different diseases to those of healthy people, looking for patterns that show how diseases change the immune system.

Lotus’ project

Understanding immune system response similarities and differences between people with cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD) and T1D. Her own experience with autoimmune disease inspired her to pursue a summer research internship at BRI.

Anna Varney (Mikacenic Lab)

Anna’s project

Studying cells in the lungs of people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) to better understand the disease. Anna came to BRI to gain hands-on experience at a nonprofit research institute and explore a career in immunology research.

Bio Adithi Vishwanath
“I’m interested in pursuing a career in medicine, so learning how information is documented in electronic health records and how medical coding is used has been especially insightful.” – Adithi Vishwanath, BRI Intern

Adithi Vishwanath (Byrd Lab)

  • Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, University of Washington

Adithi’s project

Using an electronic health record (EHR) database to study whether taking antibiotics before getting an innovative cancer treatment called checkpoint inhibitor therapy affects treatment response in people with colorectal cancer. 

Internship highlights
  • Exploring the potential of using EHR data to see how large clinical datasets can be used to answer meaningful research questions. 
  • Learning how AI can be used ethically to support research and the importance of recognizing its limitations. 
  • Seeing how lab work and computational analysis come together to build strong science.

BRI is committed to educating and mentoring the next generation of scientists. BRI’s summer internship program hosts some of the brightest and high-achieving undergraduate students to learn from BRI’s renowned faculty, postdoctoral researchers, staff scientists and technicians.
