Jack Nagan Named Executive Director, Benaroya Research Institute, Vice President VMMC

The Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) and Virginia Mason Medical Center announce the appointment of Jack Nagan, J.D., to the position of Executive Director, Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason and Vice President for Research, Virginia Mason Medical Center (VMMC), effective Feb. 1.

In his role as Executive Director, Nagan will be responsible for all business activities at BRI. Nagan will also hold a new leadership position, VMMC VP for Research, responsible for overall coordination and oversight of research activities within the VMMC.

Before coming to Virginia Mason, Nagan served as the CEO of the Northern California Institute for Research and Education, leading that research institute through a period of major growth. Prior experience included 20 years heading legal affairs for the US Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers in California and other Western states. Nagan serves on a number of Boards and advisory councils involved with medical research, including the Association of Independent Research Institutes and two other research institutes.

"What attracted me to BRI is the tremendous potential and quality of its researchers. I hope to provide the resources, visibility and environment to support BRI’s new research on immunology and molecular genetics, and development of intellectual property. Of course we will continue to focus on scientific discovery that will ultimately speed the delivery of medical solutions to people with arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and other diseases," said Nagan. "I’d like to raise the visibility of BRI—already well known in the national scientific research community—to ultimately be as well known in the Seattle area," Nagan continued.
